# Log and follow a service

A service definition supplies the maintenance task, due window, applicable model
years and claim template. Logging it creates a claim displayed as a service
record. Your administrator maintains definitions under **Services**.

*An administrator's definition supplies when the service is due and which
template and vehicle models it uses. This screen is separate from a logged record.*

1. Open the vehicle and check its model, in-service date and current mileage.
2. Find **Service schedule** and the intended definition.
3. If a service record is already linked, open it and continue there.
4. For an **Eligible now** entry with the **Log service** action, choose that
action. The current screen creates the record directly from the vehicle and
definition; it does not first ask for a date and mileage in a separate dialog.
5. On the resulting service record, review the copied lines, recorded mileage
and repair details. Complete permitted information and evidence before
   progressing its lifecycle.

If creation is refused, inspect the message. Fleetlane checks the definition's active
state and validity, model applicability, allowed creation mode, schedule
eligibility and whether a live record already exists. Reload the vehicle if
someone else may already have logged it.

**Eligible now** is a schedule classification, not a guarantee that every
reading has been supplied. Missing readings and mixed time/distance positions
can produce that state. Review the vehicle facts and your organisation's
requirements before recording work.

**Done** means the linked record has reached the configured service completion
financial milestone. **In progress** means a live record exists before that
milestone. The other schedule labels distinguish upcoming and expired work.
Your organisation's lifecycle decides which actions reach completion.

See [Services](https://docs.fleetlane.app/functionalities/services/) for definitions and schedule rules,
and [Raise and progress a claim](https://docs.fleetlane.app/guides/claim-lifecycle/) for the record's next steps.

Source review: 1 October 2026, based on `VehicleDetailPage`,
`VehicleServiceScheduleTable`, `claims.creation` and `servicePlan`. The service
definition and vehicle schedule were inspected in the local `snz` tenant on that
date. Logging a service and progressing its lifecycle remain to be exercised.
